When Luftgekühlt organized its event at the Universal Studios back lot last year, the annual gathering of air-cooled Porsches took its place as the – Go-to event of the year. Referred to as “the most ambitious car show in the world,” the event put a spin on an automotive display in a way that nobody had seen before.
For many Porsche enthusiasts it was marked as a primary destination this year. But as the coronavirus outbreak has taken over almost every aspect of modern life, event after event has been cancelled, leaving many to wonder what will happen with Luftgekühlt, currently scheduled for May 31st in Durham, North Carolina.
At this time, it seems that the show is still a go. The Luftgekühlt website added a message a few weeks ago as follows:
Ahead of Luftgekühlt 7, which is scheduled to take place in Durham, North Carolina on May 31, 2020, we wanted to assure everybody involved that we are following closely the constantly evolving federal, state and local government protocol, recommendations and mandates to assess the viability of our event. Our management team is in constant communications with health officials and will remain flexible about our response to the situation.
Until further notice, we would like to inform potential attendees, participants and sponsors that we currently plan to hold Luftgekühlt 7 as scheduled. However, we must also emphasize that the health and safety of visitors, car owners, vendors, sponsors, media and our own staff is paramount. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) as it relates to public events and activities both in the Durham area and throughout the country.
Because of the fluid nature of the virus, we will act on and follow the advice from federal, state and local health officials, review necessary measures at the venue, and issue further updates as more information becomes available.
While my guess is that the May 31st event will at least be postponed, let’s hope that it is able to be held later in the year. It was the highlight of events this year for many, including myself. Until then, here are a few photos from last year’s event.
