Does your fuel injected 914 have idle issues? A “hunting” or pulsating idle can be very anoying. And it can also vary with elevation. The car may idle well, and then while driving in the mountains or higher elevations it may not. Or vice versa.

This is due to a rich/lean condition in fuel mixture. If this mixture isn’t correct, the fuel injection keeps hunting for the correct condition, but, never finds the sweet spot.

How do you fix it? First, make sure that the timing is set correctly. Second, check for vacuum leaks. Although they can be diffiuclt to locate it is well worth your time to fix them all, as they will wreak havoc with your fuel injection.

Once you have confirming that you have no vacuum leaks and you have set the timing, locate the two adjustment screws on top of the fuel injection brain.

The one on the left that has two lines that cross in the top is the one you want to adjust. As you turn the screw it clicks into place in each location. Mark the case of the brain with a Sharpie before you turn it, so you know where you started. Then turn it one click at a time, testing how the car runs after each turn. Allthough this is not the only possible cause of :hunting” idle, it often solves the problem.
