Q: What advise do you have for a 914 newby?

A. Drive the car. As much as possible. It’s the best thing for the car and your mindset.

Aside from that, check the fuel lines, as the OEM lines were plastic and crack. It can be cause a fire. Replace them with stainless steel lines. Pull the rocker covers and check for rust. 914s tend to rust at the jack point due to a buildup of dirt and moisture. Also check under the battery for rust.

Think twice before replacing the fuel injection with carbs. If the car has carbs, consider putting the injection back on. It is surprisingly reliable. Having said that, many upgrades can really improve the car, and are fun to do.

Finally, enjoy the car before tearing it apart to restore it. The restoration will cost twice what you estimate and take three times as long. You can’t feel the wind in your hair, if the car’s is always in the garage. At least not without a fan.
